FICEBO researchers take a step into a new territory: systematic reviews and (network) meta-analyses.
Our systematic review on treatment after a traumatic shoulder dislocation was just published in the leading journal of sports medicine, the British Journal of Sports Medicine. The review covers all RCTs published on the topic, with findings that surgery does reduce the rate of recurrences, but half of patients with a first-time dislocation do not develop further instability. Immobilization in external rotation is not useful. For chronic instability and recurrent dislocations, there is an important evidence gap regarding the effectiveness of surgical treatment, even though the results in terms of further recurrences are encouraging.
